In the following video, a quick-thinking dog will save the life of a poor marine mammal who desperately needs help. The brave dog, a springer spaniel named Leia spotted the porpoise stranded on the shore, began to bark, and brought its owner to him. The man finally managed to save the helpless creature.
Photographer Rich Wilcock was walking his two-year-old dog on the shore near Criccieth in Wales when Leia suddenly barked uncontrollably as if trying to get her father’s attention. Rich followed his dog and was surprised to find a stranded marine animal.
“I was photographing the beautiful scenery when Leia started to make a right old fuss,” the man stated to Daily Post. “She kept coming up to me, barking and nudging me, she must have smelt the dolphin from a mile off. At first, I thought it was a baby shark, it was only about one and half foot but on a closer inspection I could see the blow hole on top of his head and realized it was a dolphin.”
Although Rich eventually identified this marine mammal as a dolphin, marine officials from the Ocean Observation Foundation said it was more likely to be a baby porpoise. Porpoise are marine mammals that look very similar to dolphins, however, but they are in fact related to beluga and narwhals.
In any case, the most important thing is that Rich managed to save the baby’s life when he returned the baby to the deepwater area. Then he and Leia stayed on that beach for at least an hour to make sure the purpoise was safe.
“There was nobody around for miles so I did what I could as gently as possible,” Rick said. “I lifted him gently under the belly and popped him back amongst the waves and he swam away into deeper water.”
When they returned back home, the man gave extra treats to the dog since she should be credited for the rescue . “She is a very intelligent dog, more intelligent than most,” Rich also said.
